In July 2024, a rash surfaced on Debbie Goforth’s breast. It was flaky, red, and shifting in appearance. While it wasn’t “lumpy” in the traditional sense (rather, she says, it felt like individual strands bunched up together), all the telltale signs were there. Debbie wisely sensed it was time to see a doctor. After a full battery of tests, including a mammography, ultrasound, and biopsy, the results arrived.

Debbie Goforth loved her job. As a branch manager for a local community bank, she enjoyed the intersection of banking and community networking. In addition to raising two children, she devoted 22 years to the banking, insurance, and business development sectors and had just begun to carve out more time for travel.

No one would have blamed Debbie Goforth for becoming an emotional wreck after her breast cancer diagnosis last October. After all, she heard the official news on a whim when she decided to review her digital MyChart medical records on a weekday evening—fast access to raw data, for sure, but no doctor to call and certainly no one to break the news to her in terms she could understand.
